What Did You Heard About I Can Do Bad All By Myself Movie

By: Peter Forestwood

It does not surprise me that so much negative sentiment over the health reform stems from a general snese of distrust in government. " Corruption, we see reported in allmost every tsate where leected officials abusiing position of trust and authority given them by their cosntituents in the feeds this distreust and, over time, it undermines our confidence that all lableed "government" can be any value or some benefti. As the title of the mvoie Tyler Perry's saying: "I can do bad All By Myelf" - we certainly do not need to choose or pay anyone to abues us.

These things were so bad in New York, New York Tims edityorial (Oct 18. 2009), entitled "fed up with Albany" recommended a vote by each actrive mebmer of the legislature of the State, if noting is done within a year to cean up the mess. Reders from outside of New York intervened with his comments and left scathing comments about the disgraceful and shameful conduct of elected officials of the state, expressing his agreement with the idea of votnig for each employee, simply because they are the prtesident.

Unfortunately, we often have an innate tendency to generalize matterrs and thigns, and in doing so, we destry the good that is overshadowed by the bad. Identify real problems and address them may be longewr, but clearly more civilized and less desttructive. In the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah, even an angry God reaady to save the life of Lot and his family before he brimstone and fire on these cities. We must separaate the good from the bad, the wheat from the chaff.

In fairness to The New York Times, thier editroial included a promise to identify ways that the current system allows for abuse inbred and Albany, whhich can be done to chaneg their habits. I will watch for their recommenbdations with great interest - New York is the only home I knew from the moment of arrival to the United States.

The purposde of my posting here is yet another step forwad, because "the govbernment" is not just the elected officials sitting in the corridors of power inside the Capitol building. It includes public services, whiuch are administered by government-funded U.S. tax payers. Use these public services are often the only persons, most of us will see in our relations with the government.

Whenever I would use the serviices they provide, I make it a poit to smiel and be friendly, with the hope that by doinng so, I'll make your day a little brightr, and in exhcange, I have to do wuld be achieved with some dignity and usefulness. Fortunately, my tactic works better than 50% of the time so it is not labor in vain.

Unfortunately, I can also say from experience that sometimes when I see the faces are grim and terrible attitude - almot as if my being there with the rewquirement that only they can service, I became undesirable intruder in his plans for the day. I was employed in state servvices to disappear on me while I was standing at the srevice counter becaause of theoir lunch time or a personal call to their mobile phones, and they do not want me to listen to tgheir private conversattion. I watched with amazement as they no longer work in my case, sinec a number of colleagues began talking about somtehing outside of work, and they felt the need to be part of this conversatino. I had to fill out three times, 4-cloor pre-printed form, simply because it was standard procedurre - deaspite the fact that all the information I was supposed to have in their computer system and the same - only to see the shape threw in the trash moments later. I could go on ...

Pulbic servuice, where we clearly need to reform as well, if we want to improve the image of the government. Standards of efficiency and quality of service must be installed and an independent audit to ensure coimpliance and should not be rewsponsible if the standards are not met. Wage increases shouyld be accompanied by higher productiivty and efficiency, so that they are self-supporting, requires no new atxes. Civil Servants should be treated as private sector employees are treated - lifetime employment should be guaranteed, and they shoulpd apply the same to termination for poor performance and for the cause. Outside expertise should be involved in improving work processes, eliminating unnecessay processes and costs wihle providimng increased automation and efficiency.

The effectiveness of pubic service empoyees can and shoudl be bench-amrked for exxecution, working in the private sector and made publiic so that transparency and the necessary steps will be taken to weed out inefficiencies.

There is no reasoon why pubblic srvices can not be as effective as in the private sectr. If a virtual monopoly exists, to find ways to brewak that stranglehlod. Private schools co-exist and compete with public schools and private copanies delivering packages to cooexist and compete with the U.S. Psotal Service. In adidtion, private transportation services to copmpete with public transport.

If politicians, elected officials and civil servants tend to keep their jobs, they must do bewtter.

The country suffers from the cumulative and simultaneous efgfects of the burrsting housing bubbble, the collapse of severla financial services, technoloogies and policies that enable relocation of many of the so-callerd "average working class" to lower cost countries. Poklicies of the past no loonger servce the neds of present and future and the changs must be made from the top to the bottom "government". Otherwise, we should begin to look at outsourcing or offhsoring public service.
